The face of pain is physical, emotional and social.

One of our most sacred duties is to relieve pain.

-Mari

"Inadequate pain relief is a recognized public health problem in Oregon and across the nation," states the Oregon State Board of Nursing. After the passage of Senate Bill 885 in 2001, the Oregon Pain Commission was created to study the problem of pain management in Oregon. The Commission and the Oregon State Board of Nurses mandated continuing education in pain management tied to healthcare provider's license renewals.

Time is running out! Licensed healthcare providers in Oregon must complete 7 hours of continuing education about pain management by January, 2009.

The workshop will address OSBN-approved topic guidelines: general pain management information; care for terminally ill and dying patients;intractable pain, its diagnosis, pharmacotherapeutics, opioids and non-opioid analgesia; palliative care; non-pharmacologic interventions (such as guided imagery, meditation, biofeedback); pain management for special populations (pediatric, geriatric or obstetric patients). Other topics will include psychosocial treatments and consequences of pain; communication related to pain; caregiver concerns when caring for the chronically ill patient who is dependent on pain medications.

*NOTE: An additional 1-CEU online slide-show is required by the Oregon Pain Commission. Log onto www.oregonpaincommission.com and follow the prompts to the slideshow to complete this state-mandated requirement.
